To follow the dictates of one’s own conscience instead of prevailing convention; to act in accord with one’s own feelings instead of following the crowd. As Henry David Thoreau in Walden, or Life in the Woods (1854) said:
"If one does not keep pace with their companions, perhaps it is because they hear a different drummer. Let them step to the music which they hear, however measured or far away."
